A‌ ‌college‌ ‌girl‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌unusual‌ ‌love‌ ‌for‌ ‌software‌ ‌engineering‌

Zing.vn - Maths appears very dry and is usually regarded as a male domain, but to Pham Thi Ngoc Trang, Maths is the stepping stone to her dream of becoming a software engineer.

The young girl who always gives 200%, 300% effort on pursuing her passion is doing it not for herself only, but also for her parents to believe in her decision.

Choosing software engineering because of her love for Maths

Having a small figure, Pham Thi Ngoc Ha is known by many for her intelligence and modesty. In 2017, she captivated the judges of FPT University scholarships with a 14-stanza poem and a nearly five-page essay about Maths. The unique verses helped Ha make a strong impression and attain a 100% scholarship.

“Computers, games… all have algorithms
IT opens up a new horizon
Always seeing Maths as the core
Do you see, child? Maths is amazing…”

While girls at her age are into fashion, beauty and entertainment, Ha spends most of her time searching and explaining all fields through Maths. The deeper the research, the more Ngoc Ha felt like Maths is really interesting subject as it is applied to almost every aspect in life, from physics, chemistry, biology to even music or art - the seemingly unrelated area to Maths.

She then concluded: “Maths is not dry but in fact, mysteriously beautiful”.

Using deductive reasoning and logical thinking skills acquired from her passion for maths, Ngoc Ha solved IQ and EQ questions, calculations… in the FPT University scholarship exam. It was also the event leading to her study in software engineering and the motivation for seeking her true passion, a future software engineer.

Be confident in your passion
Ngoc Ha managed to persuade her parents to pursue her passion though always seeing herself as a shy girl. Choosing her university, Ha decided not to follow her parents’ footsteps but study software engineering at FPT University instead. She considered it a part of her journey to prove to her parents about her decision.

Ha jumped right into her major as she was overqualified for the school’s English program with her 6.0 IELTS. Making a remarkable feat herself, the young girl still modestly said that she needed to learn more. To Ha, “If you are good at your major but aren’t good-looking then your career opportunities will be limited. If you have expertise in your major then don’t let language barriers hinder your success”.

Learning languages helps her passion materialize so she always puts her mind into it. Studying in complete English with foreign textbooks is also an advantage for her. Besides, she can participate in competitions like Reach to Olympus, visit many businesses, join various clubs, especially learning the martial art Vovinam.

Sharing her thoughts with students intent on taking the next FPT University exam, Ngoc Ha said: “The test focuses roughly on logical thinking, calculations and you should start from the first questions to the end, prioritizing easier ones. The questions’ difficulty doesn’t depend on their lengths so make sure to read carefully. For the essay, your perspective and sincerity should be well-expressed”.

This year FPT University offered studies in the following majors: software engineering; information assurance; business administration; hotel management;  international business; English language; Japanese language; multimedia communication; graphic design based on the recruitment exam on 13/5 or registration for admissions.
